I was having a great conversation with a client recently about the purpose of marketing. During this conversation, I realized that many entrepreneurs, even successful ones, haven’t studied sales and marketing. They are the technicians in their business, as described in The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. In fact, they are usually the best technicians which lead them to start their own business in the first place. Marketing is a language I’d like to have in common with our clients, so I decided to take a moment to write a bit about it. This time, specifically on the Marketing & Sales Funnel.

After over 23 years in a business setting, and leading the company for over 15 of those, I realize that I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours on management classes, seminars, books, and consultants. In that time, my favorite area of study has become metrics, due to my natural like of numbers. Within that field of study, the Marketing & Sales Funnel is my favorite to discuss. Not only because it help the mystical qualities of marketing become quantifiable, but it’s pretty to look at, and directly impacts our clients’ (and my own) bottom line.

It’s called the Marketing & Sales Funnel because the process is designed to take a large quantity (our Target Audience) and distill it down to a small, manageable quantity (our Clients).

The funnel is usually broken into segments, such as above, as each stage has particular processes to weed out the non-desirables and help you focus on the suspects and prospects that will become clients.

This is just introduction to a multi-part blog series on the Marketing & Sales Funnel.  We will explore, in bite size segments, each part of the Funnel and relate it to real-world marketing and sales. We hope to educate our friends, prospects, and clients, as well as bring this vocabulary into our conversations about marketing and sales that lead to your SUCCESS.

Stay tuned for our next post as we cover how to select a Target Audience.  Target Audience will become the top of your Marketing & Sales Funnel and will start our journey to getting you more clients!

Marketing & Sales Funnel - Part 1

We welcome your comments, public and private, as we continue the dialogue.  Your feedback can help shape the conversation and get you (and your peers) the information they are looking for!
